‘Nigeria Needs Early Goal Against Namibia’
With just two days to the crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Namibia in Calabar, former Under-20 star John Ene Okon has advised the team to gun for an early goal so as to settle the nerves of the crowd and put themselves in an advantageous position.
“I have not seen Namibia play so I cannot say for sure what their tactics will be but as the away side, they will be coming to Nigeria to make sure that they give themselves a fighting chance in the return leg,” said Okon.
“So, there is every possibility that they will sit back and hope to catch the Eagles on the counter attack though I will be pleasantly surprised if they come out attacking but if they do not, the Eagles have to start the game as if it will end in 15 minutes.
“Our style in recent years has been too laid back which gives our opponents confidence – they should try and get a goal quickly to unsettle the Namibians so that whatever plan they had in snatching a draw will be dashed quickly. If we do that, you can be sure that they will come out to play and that will help us score more goals,” Okon added.
All the invited foreign-based players are in Calabar preparing with the home-based for the must-win match against the Brave Warriors of Namibia on Sunday at the U.J Esuene Stadium.
