Amaechi Extols Diamond Bank Boss For Banking Excellence
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has extolled the excellent contributions of the Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Diamond Bank, Dr. Alex Otti to the banking sector and the state.
Governor Amaechi made the commendation yesterday at a banquet organised by the Rivers State government to honour the banker who was bestowed with a Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) degree by the University of Port Harcourt
Represented by the Deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi described Dr Otti as a reliable partner in the task of development of the state.
Governor Amaechi noted that Dr Otti merited the award bestowed on him, adding that the honour from a prestigious University like the university of Port Harcourt cannot be a mistake knowing his worth and achievements in the banking sector.
He noted that Dr Otti has done enough for the economic growth of Rivers State, and is therefore a huge blessing to the state, explaining that he is a very special person who has assisted the state government tremendously in its onerous task of turning the state into a paradise.
The Governor urged Dr. Otti who left the First Bank to Diamond Bank to continue to attract and contribute his wealth of experiences to the economic growth of the state.
“When you were not a Chief Executive, we were your friends and will like to remain your friend even as you ascend to a higher position. The state will like you to continue to do those good things you used to do for the state”, Governor Amaechi said.
Also speaking at the occasion, the wife of the Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi congratulated Dr Otti for the honour and recognition, noting that his hard work and dedication has brought him so far.
Dame Amaechi called on him to continue to partner with his state government in areas that would help develop the state.
The chairman of the occasion and former Chief of General Staff, Navy Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (Rtd) extolled the leadership role Dr Otti in the banking sector and urged him to continue in that direction.
Commodore Ukiwe reminded him that his people from far and near have come to witness his decoration, stressing that he should continue to display excellence in all his endeavours in the financial sector.

Sugar Tax ‘ll Threaten Manufacturing Sector, Says CPPE
In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer, CPPE, Muda Yusuf, said while public health concerns such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases deserve attention, imposing an additional sugar-specific tax was economically risky and poorly suited to Nigeria’s current realities of high inflation, weak consumer purchasing power and rising production costs.
According to him, manufacturers in the non-alcoholic beverage segment are already facing heavy fiscal and cost pressures.
“The proposition of a sugar-specific tax is misplaced, economically risky, and weakly supported by empirical evidence, especially when viewed against Nigeria’s prevailing structural and macroeconomic realities.
The CPPE boss noted that retail prices of many non-alcoholic beverages have risen by about 50 per cent over the past two years, even without the introduction of new taxes, further squeezing consumers.
Yusuf further expressed reservation on the effectiveness of sugar taxes in addressing the root causes of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
