…Moves To Enhance Sports
Mr Patrick Ugbe, Cross River Commissioner for Sports, says the arrival of newly procured state-of-the-art sporting equipment is to enhance the state’s Comprehensive Sports Development Programme.
Ugbe made the remark at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, after a facility tour.
The commissioner told newsmen recently in Calabar that the equipment would be distributed across the state to key areas.
Ugbe, who assumed duty two weeks ago, said that he embarked on the inspection “to assess the state’s readiness for upcoming sporting activities.
“The sports equipment we ordered under the Comprehensive Sports Development Programme have arrived in three container loads and they will be distributed across the state and we will ensure adequate security.
“The essence is to check how ready we are for upcoming competitions. We will host the All Nigeria Athletics meet sponsored by the State Government in June.
“It is very important because this in an Olympic year and it will also be used as trials to select our athletes for the global sports fiesta.”
Ugbe reiterated the state’s readiness to host the nation at the 19th National Sports Festival in 2014 and to ensure that measures being in place for a successful hosting were implemented to the letter.
“We will be hosting the National Sports Festival in 2014.
“We need to begin our preparation. I am here to take an inventory and see how we are going to fortify and provide necessary equipment to host a successful sporting event.”
Also speaking, the State Director of Sports, Dr Jude Amadi told NAN that the new equipment would bring about a pivotal change to sports development in Cross River.
“The commissioner came here to inspect storage facilities and he also told us that the much awaited high-tech sports equipments have arrived for upcoming sports meet. We are very happy.’’
