Consciousness, Witchcraft And Literature (II)
Motivation 1
We heard of the new form of magic and decided to investigate the truth of the matter. We went to the source where a medicine man who knew the principles of witchcraft taught us. We went home and tried it on some persons. The principles worked’. The leader said.
The narrator gives us the motive behind the search for power in the context as having been motivated by a new sense of manhood. Man has always searched for power of one kind or another; something that gives him advantage over his fellow man.
Motivation 2
I spoke to a very beautiful lady she refused my advances. I did everything to please her but failed. My friend had just introduced me to witchcraft; I used the power and succeeded in having an affair with her.
The motivation here is to have an affair with the lady. The narrator succeeds through the suppression of the consciousness of the oppressed, negating the will of the lady, which every good law backs.
Consciousness, Law and the will
If one is asked to lie down on a muddy ground in his immaculate white suit, he is most likely to resist vehemently. If the same person is asked to do so by an individual who points a gun at him, he obeys because of the fear of death. His friends will not blame him for the involuntary action.
When an armed robber enters a house and tells everyone to surrender or be shot dead. All sane persons are most likely to obey. If he goes further to ask them to bring all the money in the house, they will give him not willingly but grudgingly. It implies that the will is forced or hijacked.
One’s will is necessary in every meaningful negotiation or agreement. A woman gives her consent to a man in marriage after deliberating on his proposal, asking her inner being the possibilities of lasting joy, material, spiritual, educational, social and economic developments. This standard is what is expected in a fair relationship. The law comes in to solemnise the couple after parents have given their consent. Consciousness, law and will blend in the right proportions to offer lasting relationship.
The earlier Narrative 1 shows the negation of the will of the woman by the wizard and the social minor punishment imposed by the landlord and other tenants on him: giving immediate quit notice, forcing him to pack from the compound because of his witchcraft practices.
Why is it that armed robbery is not encouraged by the government? It is because it is the kind of misdemeanour that claims the lives of innocent citizens. Moreover, the will of the person(s) is robbed. He gives money to someone not because of a business transaction, nor as gift. The court punishes the armed robber for these reasons and others.
Conclusion
Witchcraft is a possibility that operates at the lower states of consciousness. Those at higher states of consciousness are capable of preventing it. It is expressed through African Traditional Religions and Philosophy. It has been discussed from the philosophical and psychological perspectives as a phenomenon that is known to Africans who use it for various purposes. The law does not favour it since it is mostly used to suppress the will of others for purposes of selfish triumph, destruction and deprivation. It has been constructed as literature in the essay: plot, characterisation, dialogue, dramatic action, suspense and flashback are the characteristics of the magic literature and realism.
