Junior Tennis Tournament Kicks Off In Port Harcourt, Today
Thirty-two primary and secondary schools have registered for the second edition of the Rivers State Junior Tennis Tournament which starts today and ends on April 14, 2012 at the Lawn Tennis Section of Port Harcourt Club, Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt. This is out of 58 schools invited to participate in the tournament.
Sponsored by Total E ^& P Nigeria Ltd. And organized by the Rivers State Lawn Tennis Association, the tournament will be in the Under age 12 and Under age 16 Categories for boys and girls attending Primary and Secondary Schools in Rivers State.
According to the Chairman of the Tournament Committee and Second Vice Chairman of the Tennis Association, Mr. Isaac Uzorma, there would be three days of preliminary matches while six days would be devoted to the main draw. The finals would hold on Saturday April 14, 2012.
Mr. Uzorma also disclosed tht the winners would cart home prizes that are intended to advance their playing careers.
Meanwhile in a chat with newsmen, the Chairman of the Rivers State Lawn Tennis Association, Right Honourable Tonye Harry has paid tribute to Total for sponsoring Tennis at the Junior level.
Harry, who is also Second Vice President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation said unless responsible corporations and public spirited individuals sponsor tennis, Nigeria may never get into the main draws of the Davis Cup (the equivalent of the World Cup in Tennis).
Harry commended the management of Port Harcourt Club and the Tennis Sectionfor making their facilities available for the tournament.
