Normal Operations Resume At Rivers Ports
Normal operations have resumed at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Area One, Port Harcourt and at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne, Rivers State following the suspension of the six days protest strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the removal of fuel subsidy.
The Tide correspondent observed that workers were seen going about their normal duties both at the security gates and in their offices.
It was gathered that four ships are on berth at the NPA Wharf, Area One, Port Harcourt.
They include Alexandros Theo, Essex Strait, Hailfeng 668, Bua Cement and Lucifa.
When contacted, the Public Affairs Officer, NPA Port Harcourt, Mrs Barbra Achike said operations were on as all workers were on seat since after the strike.
Also contacted, the PRO, NPA, Onne Port complex, Mrs Lizzy said everything was calm as work was going on smoothly.
In their separate reactions, the Chairman of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Onne Ports Complex, Ossy Prestige and his counterpart at NPA, Area One Complex, Kingsley Offor confirmed that they had resumed operations and every thing was in order.
According to them, they were working out modalities to make shipping companies to give them waivers for the number of days the strike lasted, as they were ready to look into the demurrage accrued as a result of the strike as most vessels came in before the protest.
Also, the Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Eastern Zone, Comrade Waite Harry noted that workers at the various seaports including those in the zone had all been going to work since after the strike and thanked all for complying with the directive.
According to him, he has gone round the Ports and confirmed that both the dock workers, sea fishers, shipping companies and others are on operation, further assuring that workers interest would always be protected.
