Surveyors To Upgrade Marine Courses In Rivpoly
The Surveyor’s Council of Nigeria (SURVCON) has promised to establish a centre of excellence in Hydrographic and Marine Survey in the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori.
Mr Winston Ayeni who disclosed this Monday, during a courtesy visit to the Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Toku-Ibiye Sokari, said that SURVCON was working in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the immediate commencement of the centre which is expected to serve the entire West Africa sub region.
According to him RIVPOLY was chosen out of other polytechnics in Nigeria, because of the functional and vibrant natures of the department of surveying and geo-informative of the polytechnic.
Mr Ayeni who is also the Registrar of SURVCON listed some of the benefits to be derived from the establishment of Hydrographic and marine survey centre of the polytechnic, to include the offering of consultancy service in cartography and some aspects of marine survey.
He lauded Professor Sokari for putting Rivpoly on the path of progress and promise that SURVCON, would finalise all arrangements concerning the establishment of the Hydrogrpahic and marine survey centre of excellence to enable the polytechnic admit students into the centre in next academic year.
Responding, the Rector of the polytechnic Professor Toku-Ibiye Sokari thanked the visiting Registrar of SURVCON and his entourage for the choice of Rivpoly, pointing out that polytechnic has consistently established programs aimed at tackling peculiar problems in the Niger Delta Region.
Professor Sokari rcalled that when he assumed office in Rivpoly, the Surveying Department and the Department of Urban and Regional planning were facing extinction and imminent de-accreditation by the NBTE, but he did everything possible to resuscitate the ailing departments which were now duly accredited by the National Board for Technical Education.
The Rector further promise that Rivpoly would give SURVCON the necessary support to enhance the speedy establishment of the Hydrographic centre of excellence in the polytechnic, and used the opportunity to thank the Rivers State chapter of SURVCON for the donation of survey equipment and some cash earlier to the polytechnic.
However, the Registrar of SURVCON was accompanied on the visit by a council member of SURVCON, representing Rivers and Bayelsa State, Doctor C.I.W. Ezi.

HYPREP Tightens Security At Project Sites
Following the rupture of the ground tank of its water facility in Ebubu Community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has tightened security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
HYPREP, which dropped this hint in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Dr Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, said the Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey had given the directive for security to be tightened across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
Mba-Nwigoh noted that the tightening of security across the project sites has become necessary to forestall interference with the facilities.
He further disclosed that following the rupture of the ground tank of the Ebubu water facility, a team led by HYPREP’s Director of Technical Services, Prof Damian-Paul Aguiyi has visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation, stressing that the water facility has been cordoned off for public safety.
The statement indicated that following the incident, HYPREP has henceforth barred non-project personnel and non-facility staff from gaining access into any of its active project sites in Ogoniland without authorisation.
While appealing to residents of Ebubu Community and the public to remain calm, the Head of Communications assured them that the Project is taking prompt steps to restore water to the community, saying, the cause of the unfortunate incident is being investigated.
He equally noted that the Chief Security Officer of HYPREP has been directed to immediately tighten security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
The statement said HYPREP is deeply concerned about the incident, stressing that despite the setback, the Project reiterates its commitment to delivering sustainable cleanup in Ogoniland.
