Boxing Body Moves To End Skirts Controversy

Published

on

Amateur boxing’s governing body will sound out competitors and the public before deciding whether women should wear skirts instead of shorts in the ring at next year’s London Olympics.

AIBA spokesman Sebastien Gillot said that the world body had never suggested skirts should be compulsory and the association was surprised at the way a clothing controversy had snowballed in the last week.

“It’s quite frustrating to see the way in which this news has been going around,” he told Tidesports source. “We are aware that it’s a very sensitive issue.”

Several women boxers have criticised attempts to encourage them to wear skirts for what seemed to be purely aesthetic reasons.

Lausanne-based AIBA said the ‘uniform’ issue would be discussed in January by its technical and rules commission, which would make recommendations for the executive committee to make a final ruling.

“At this point in time, AIBA is seeking a consensus from the worldwide boxing family and the wider public for reference purposes,” said AIBA in a statement.

Women’s boxing will be making its Olympic debut in London next year with three gold medals available.

The women were offered skirts for the first time at the world championships in Barbados last year.

Again, Tottenham Part Ways With Coach

Published

on

Igor Tudor has left his role as Tottenham Hotspur interim head coach after just 44 days and seven matches.

Spurs said they have mutually agreed with the Croat to part ways with immediate effect.

The decision comes a week after a damaging 3-0 home defeat by fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest on 22 March, a result that left Spurs 17th in the table and only one point above the relegation places with seven games remaining.

Tottenham have suffered five defeats in seven matches in all competitions since Tudor succeeded the sacked Thomas Frank on 14 February, on a deal until the end of the season.

Spurs said: “An update on a new head coach will be provided in due course.”

Tidesports source understands Spurs will appoint Tudor’s replacement in the next few days to be in place for when most players return from international duty.

Tudor’s assistant Bruno Saltor will oversee training for those at the club.

They confirmed goalkeeping coach Tomislav Rogic and physical coach Riccardo Ragnacci have also departed.

Tudor, 47, did not undertake post-match media duties after the defeat by Forest because of the death of his father.

“We thank Igor, Tomislav and Riccardo for their efforts during the past six weeks, in which they worked tirelessly,” said Spurs in a statement.

“We also acknowledge the bereavement that Igor has recently suffered and send our support to him and his family at this difficult time.”

Tudor lost each of his first four matches as Spurs boss. The opening defeat by north London rivals Arsenal was followed by losses against Fulham and Crystal Palace in the league before a calamitous 5-2 Champions League last 16 first-leg defeat away to Atletico Madrid.

He celebrated his first point after Richarlison scored a 90th-minute equaliser at Liverpool, and then watched his side win their second leg against Atletico, although they failed to overturn their three-goal deficit.

However, the woeful defeat by Forest heightened Spurs’ fears of suffering their first relegation from the top flight since 1977 and proved to be the final game of his brief spell.

The single point which Spurs have collected since Tudor’s appointment is the fewest of any side in the Premier League during that time.

But they have been bottom of the form table since mid-December.

They are without a victory in 13 league matches since a 1-0 triumph over Crystal Palace on 28 December – 88 days ago – while their last win in any competition was over Eintracht Frankfurt on 28 January.

Among their issues this season has been an extensive list of long-term injuries to key players, including the likes of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham will resume their league campaign after the international break with a trip to 11th-placed Sunderland on 12 April.

They then face Brighton (home), Wolves (away), Aston Villa (away), Leeds (home), Chelsea (away) and Everton (home) as they seek to secure their Premier League status.

CAF’s  Secretary Resigns

Published

The general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has resigned amid a chaotic time for football on the continent.

Veron Mosengo-Omba said in a statement he was retiring, but his departure comes during the fallout over decisions to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title and postpone the women’s tournament at the last minute.

These incidents have left Caf, the governing body for African football, battling a crisis of confidence.

Mosengo-Omba alluded to controversies faced during his tenure in his statement on yesterday.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever,” Mosengo-Omba, deputy to Caf president Patrice Motsepe, wrote.

The 66-year-old has been criticised for staying on as general secretary past the organisation’s mandatory retirement age of 63.

He has also been accused by some employees of creating a toxic atmosphere in the workplace, although an investigation after staff complaints cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Mosengo-Omba, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo but also holds Swiss nationality, was appointed general secretary in March 2021.

According to sources, Caf’s competitions director, Samson Adamu, will take over as acting general secretary.

The governing body is awaiting a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) on Senegal’s appeal against being stripped of the Afcon title.

Senegal is challenging Caf’s appeals body for overturning their 1-0 win over hosts Morocco in January’s Afcon final.

During the game, Senegal’s players left the field in protest when, with the score at 0-0, hosts Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

When they returned after a delay of about 17 minutes, Morocco subsequently failed to score the spot-kick and Senegal netted an extra-time winner.

Following an appeal by the Moroccan FA (FRMF), Caf later ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match and Morocco were awarded a 3-0 victory.

Senegal Parade AFCON Trophy Before Friendly

Published

Senegal paraded the Africa Cup of Nations trophy before Saturday’s friendly match against Peru at Stade de France, despite being stripped of the title earlier this month.

Morocco were declared the winners of the 2025 Afcon tournament when the Confederation of African Football (Caf) overturned the result of January’s final.

Senegal’s players left the field in protest when, with the score at 0-0, hosts Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

Senegal have lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), which has said it will rule on the matter as swiftly as possible.

Before the match against Peru, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and his team-mates entered the pitch with the Afcon trophy for a lap of honour, before Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy went up to the stadium’s presidential box to place the trophy there.

Senegal also played in a kit with two stars above their badge to signify having won two Afcon titles, the disputed 2025 tournament and their previous 2021 title.

They beat Peru 2-0 following goals from Nicolas Jackson, who is on loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea, and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr.

The friendly in Paris was Senegal’s first match since the Afcon final and forms part of their preparations for the World Cup, which starts in June.

They have been drawn in the same group as France, Norway and either Bolivia or Iraq.
