Edo Gov’s Aide Decries Rot Among NGOs
An activist and aide to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Mrs Benedicta Attoh, has decried the rot that had permeated Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the country.
Attoh is the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Oshiomhole on NGO matters. told newsmen in Benin that NGOs among other responsibilities, perform humanitarian functions within their operations environment.
“But I must confess that the general societal rot and decay have permeated NGOs in this part of the world making them to derail from their set objectives,” she disclosed.
She said also that some of the NGOs had allowed the rot and decay to influence their operation “but I should say that a great majority of them have remained focused with their activities.
Attoh said her function as SSA “is to liaise with other states’ NGOs, government and the individuals.
“I act as information hob for state government and NGOs as well as how the state government could deliver on its promises and mandate to the people.
“Coming from the background of activism, the governor created this portfolio because he wants to listen and hear more from the people, she stated.
Attoh, who further disclosed that over 1,000 NGOs exists across the country, said that government was planning an Edo NGO forum which is expected to attract both local and international donor agencies.
The SSA further disclosed that state government has concluded arrangement with a global NGO ‘that deals with the examination of children’s eyes, adding that “They will be in Edo in October on an intervention programme to save school children who would have gone blind at no cost to them.
“We also hope to use the Edo forum in October to highlight other pressing issues that affect the people, especially people at the grass roots to the attention of international funding partners.
