Stakeholders Set Agenda For LG Boss
The Stakeholders in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area have set an agenda for the council chairman as they called for an intensified effort towards upgrading the human and infrastructural development of the area.
Speaking at a one-day stakeholders meeting tagged “Agenda for Development” in Port Harcourt, Rivers State last Thursday, the stakeholders stressed the need for the council boss and legislative assembly to utilise the limited allocation in improving the lives of the ordinary people.
Chairman of the forum and Dean, Faculty of Management Science in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Port Harcourt, Prof Seth Accra-Jaja said that the way to transform the area was to take stock of previous achievements and setting fresh milestones capable of transforming the lives of the rural people considering the difficult terrain of the area.
Prof. Accra-Jaja Stated that the new agenda has become imperative following the haphazard development by previous administrations which they accused of alienated from the real needs of the people. Accra-Jaja also stressed the need for an improved internally generated revenue activities since the council receives one of the lowest federal allocation monthly.
Other areas that need to be addressed include the perennial power supply, poor health provision, security and education, as he lamented policy implementation in the area over the years.
Also speaking, former Assistant Comptroller-General of Immigration, Sir Igoni Williams Park charged the local authorities to intensity efforts towards improving internal revenue.
Sir Park noted that the council would continue to be beset with poor financial resources unless it seeks for complementary revenue sources in order to address the huge developmental challenges.
Similarly, Mr. Don Cookey called for proper reticulations for water provision to the people. Mr. Cookey challenged the council boss, Hon. Maclean Uranta to seek for alternative means of solving the poor water supply by seeking the collaboration of the Rivers State Ministry of Water Resources.
On the unemployment problem in the local government area Venerable Christian Johnny Jaja urged the council chairman to maintain the various committees since it helped in providing incomes for members who provide various services for the local council.
His view was supported by Mrs. Rosemenid Peterside, who appealed to the local chairman not to dissolve the committees as, “it greatly provides relief for families.
