Governors Forum Resolves To Pay New Minimum Wage
The 36 state governors under the aegis of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) have decided to commence modalities for the implementation of the N18,000 new minimum wage “without further delay.”
The governors made the decision in a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting in the early hours of Saturday in Abuja.
“On the issue of the new minimum wage, the forum resolved to comply with the provisions of the Minimum Wage Act,” the communique, read by Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, the forum’s chairman and Rivers State governor said.
It also urged the various state governments to commence modalities to implement the new minimum wage.
The forum condemned the worsening security situation in Borno state and the attendant loss of lives and properties even as it urged the leadership of the state to “do everything possible to curtail the situation”.
The governors stressed the need to intensify efforts to eradicate polio, adding that they would hold quarterly sensitisation campaign in all the states to raise awareness on dangers posed by the disease.
The meeting fixed, Aug. 13 and Nov. 12, as well as Feb. 11, and May 12, 2012, for “an elaborate awareness programme” on the disease to be held in the 36 states of the federation.
The meeting was attended by the Governors of Anambra, Borno, Bauchi, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Enugu, Kwara and Kaduna.
Also in attendance were the governors of Kogi, Kastina, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Imo, Yobe, Taraba, amongst others.
The NGF is an umbrella association of elected serving governors irrespective of political party affiliation.
The forum, seeks to promote good governance and equal development across the federating states.
It has in the recent past, been able to douse political tension in the country.
