Child Birth Control Gets Boost In Rivers
There are strong indications that child birth control has grown in Rivers State, following the decline of teenage pregnancy and increment in number of those seeking child birth control assistance.
Giving the hint during an exclusive chat with The Tide on Monday in Port Harcourt Coordinator of Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) in the state, Mr. Emmanuel Owor, stated that the findings are more in the city than in the rural areas.
Over the years, he said, publicity and public education has been intensified with poor results since societal perception of children bearing is still highly hinged on archaic African beliefs.
According to him, PPFN recorded about 1,200 new acceptors with about 3,900 continued acceptors last year saying it was an indication of improvement from previous figures.
He said that even at the national level, child birth has declined as statistics provided by the National Population Commission (NPC) indicate that an average Nigerian family has 3-3 children.
The Rivers State PPFN boss, however, lamented that the situation was yet to affect the rural population, where publicity was poor and called for creation of childbirth control centres in all localities of the state.
Mr. Owor also noted, “we are aiming to collaborate with the Rivers State Government, especially in the newly opened health centres, to establish a family planning units”.
He believed that with the establishment of family planning units in the rural areas childbirth control would be highly embraced by the local people.
On the best methods of childbirth control, Owor said “the issue of best methods of family planning depends on the physiology of the person, but it could be a man or a woman”.
