East-West Road Construction …Community Laments Non-Payment Of N2.3bn Compensation
The Eket community in Akwa Ibom, has decried the non-payment of compensation to owners of property affected by the East-West Road project.
In separate interviews, the leaders of Ekid Peoples’ Union, a socio-cultural organisation of Eket people and the Afigh Iwaad Ekid, a youth group, decried the delay in the compensation process.
Chief Ekpu Johnson, the National President of the union, told the newsmen in Eket yesterday.
that the community had petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan to draw his attention to the outstanding compensation.
He said that the people were aware that N4 billion was provided to pay property owners along the Eket-Oron section of the road, adding: “while other communities have been paid, Eket people did not get anything.
“That is the situation, but we will not take laws into our hands. We shall follow due process and try not to disturb the peace.’’
Johnson also complained that work on the road project being handled by Gitto Construction Company, was slow and urged the Federal Government to consider re-awarding the contract to a more competent contractor.
He said that Eket people recently staged a peaceful protest at the project site to draw the attention of relevant government agencies over the poor and slow pace of work at the Eket-Oron section of the road.
“We found out that Gitto collected 51 per cent of the contract sum but executed only 30 per cent of the job.
“We also learnt that it got approval for an upward review of the contract; yet there is no sign of seriousness at the project site,’’ he said
On his part, Mr Bassey Nkanang, the President-General of Eket Youths (Afigh Iwaad Ekid), said that the group would resist moves to divert the road from the community.
“We will not accept anything short of a dual carriage road as contained in the original design.
“We want an immediate payment of N2.3 billion due to Eket people who own property along the right of way of the Eket-Oron section of the East-West road,’’ Nkanang said.
Officials of the company at the project site told newsmen that they were not competent to comment on the concerns expressed by the Eket community.
