FG Gets Knocks Over Hike In Cement Price

Workers of Eagles Bulkcement firm in Port Harcourt have blamed the Federal Government over the high cost of cement in the country, saying the price of the product may continue to be on the high side unless Federal Government reduces its huge import tariff on the product.

Speaking to journalists during a workers solidarity forum organised by both senior and junior staff of Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Association of Eagles Bulkcement Company in Port Harcourt yesterday, the union leaders advised against the continuous high import tariff.

Comrade Simeon Onyeama, Chairman of Senior Staff Association Chemical and Non-Metallic Products in the company said in the past few years, manufacturers of cement products had been battling with high cement importation tariff currently affecting buyers.

According to Comrade Onyeama, the tariff was raised from five per cent to 35 per cent which he said was inimical to free flow of products since a lot of producers rely on import than local production.

He said, “ formerly, a vessel of 45, 000 metric tonnes which cleared with N82milion now clears with over N300million and that is responsible for the hike in the price of cement.

The labour leader said that the situation had equally affected workers in the industry, since their employers had to contend with the vagaries in the market coupled with the stringent polices of government.

In the same vein, Public Relations Officer of Eagle Bulkcement Company, Chief Collins Wabara attributed the high price of cement to demand and supply shortfalls in the market.

Chief Wabara noted that,” if the demand is higher than the supply, definitely, the price would go higher and that is exactly what is happening now. The aggregate volume of demand for cement in Nigeria is quite high compared to supply”.

On the new cement tariff, he urged the Federal Government to review the high tariff, saying, ‘ we have been appealing to the government to see reasons why the new tariff should be reviewed. If the new tariff is reviewed, I think the price of cement would actually drop”.

A market survey conducted by The Tide indicates that a bag of 50kg of cement goes for between N2,000 and N2,200 depending on the brand.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. She urged civil servants across the state to remain supportive of the governor’s administration in order to sustain good governance and effective public service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the Body of Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Brown congratulated Governor Fubara on the occasion of his 51st birthday, describing him as “a Governor who leads by serving.”

She further praised the governor’s service-driven and people-centred leadership approach, noting that it has significantly contributed to institutional stability and improved efficiency within the state’s public service. Special appreciation was expressed for the approval of a befitting accommodation complex for Permanent Secretaries, which she said reflects the governor’s commitment to staff welfare and enhanced productivity.

As part of activities to mark the governor’s birthday, the Body of Permanent Secretaries announced the sponsorship of 329 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for indigent students across the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
