Abuja Prosecutes 5,989 Over Environmental Offences
Over 5,989 persons have been prosecuted for various environmental offences in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja between December, 2010 and now. Out of the figure, 181 have bear convicted and imprisoned.
Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed who disclosed this in Abuja said that, of the 5,989 persons prosecuted, 182 cases were discharged for lack of evidence while 741 warrant of arrest were issued and 659 Up orders executed.
Senator Mohammed who was speaking after examining the activities of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) in Area 11, Garki District Office said that the Abuja Environmental Protection Board during the period also inspected 1,550 premises comprising hospitals, residential, hospitality industries, parks, markets and public conveniences to ensure that high standard of sanitary condition is achieved in the Territory.
According to him, the AEPB buried 22 unclaimed corpses and served 350 abatement notices for various environmental health offences adding that 50 non-compliance are due for re-inspection and possibly prosecution.
The AEPB during the same period arrested 1,850 hawkers including 120 minors; remove from the streets 12 lunatics; while 34 sex hawkers were also arrested during special night operations in Garki and Wuse districts respectively.
“A total of 1,279.9 tonnes of special waste where evacuated from 334 healthcare facilities in the FCT; while 22,349 tonnes of municipal waste where also evacuated and deposited at the waste disposal sites within the period,” the Minister reiterated.
