NGO Hails Judgement On Child Witches
The Child Rights Rehabilitation Network (CRARN), a Non Governmental OrganisationNGO based in Eket, Akwa Ibom, has applauded a Calabar High Court for striking out a suit against it.
The court had last week struck out the suit instituted by Liberty Gospel Church, Eket, against the NGO for infringing on its rights to spread the gospel.
Our correspondent reports that Liberty Gospel Church dragged CRARN, Stepping Stones Nigeria Child Empowerment Foundation and the Akwa Ibom Government to court, demanding for 1.3 billion dollars as damages.
Reacting to the verdict, Sam Ikpe-Itauma, a child rights activist and Executive Director of CRARN, told newsmen in Eket that the decision was a victory against the stigmatisation of children who were wrongly labeled as witches.
“This is the beginning of justice for stigmatised children in Nigeria. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who stood by us in the fight against satanic activities in the name of God.
“This case has highlighted instances in which the best interests of the child are overlooked by those wishing to make money by propagating the child witchcraft agenda,” Ikpe-Itauma said.
Also speaking, Mr. Gary Foxcroft, the Programme Director of Child Empowerment Foundation, said the decision was a victory for the Nigerian child.
“This is a wonderful victory for child rights in Nigeria. It further goes to show the depravity of some of the ‘fake apostles’ intent on profiteering from the sufferings of innocent children.
“It is hoped that this case will be a landmark victory and set the precedence for other cases in which church leaders seek to exploit children for their own gains,” Foxcroft said.
Our correspondent reports that CRARN collaborates with Stepping Stones to provide accommodation, education, healthcare, food, clothing and rehabilitation to some 200 stigmatised and abandoned children who are accused of witchcraft in Akwa Ibom.
