AD Slams Senate Over Decision On Ex-Military Leaders
The Alliance for Democracy (AD), on Saturday in Lagos criticised the exclusion of former military Heads of State from the list of the country’s past presidents by the Senate.
The party’s Deputy National Chairman, Alhaji Musa Umar, told newsmen that the Senate should rescind the decision.
The Upper House had on March 11, passed a motion removing former military Heads of State, including the Head of Interim National Government of 1993, Chief Ernest Shonekan, from the list of past presidents enjoying certain allowances.
Umar urged the Senate to reconsider its stand on the matter and allow the ex-military leaders to continue to enjoy the remunerations.
“I think the Senate should reconsider their position and include them on the list of past leaders of the country to enjoy the allowances.
“It is not fair; whatever brought these former leaders to power was a situation we could consider as a necessity to hold this country together.
“So, I do not think it is fair to remove them from enjoying remuneration of former leaders,’’ he said.
On the five presidential advisers recently approved for Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, Umar condemned the criticism that trailed the appointment.
“The president has the right to choose the people he wants to work with.
“It is only politically expedient for him to try some little balancing by appointing some northerners, southerners and religious leaders.
“ I do not think people should castigate him for this, as he has very limited time. We should allow him to focus on his job,’’ he said.
