FCT Minister Promises Land To Principals
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Senator Adamu Aliero has pledged to allocate plots of land in the FCT Abuja, to principals, in acknowledgement of their immense contributions to raising the standard of education and imparting knowledge in the FCT.
Senator Aliero made this revelation while declaring open the 2009 Mandatory Continuing Professional Training of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) of the North Central Zone at NUT House, Lugbe-Abuja.
The Minister disclosed that the 200 principals in the FCT public schools would have their plots allocated in two phases due to the large number involved.
Senator Aliero, at the occasion donated a 15-Seater Bus to the FCT Chapter of ANCOPSS to be used for its official functions like conveying of members to Conferences/Workshops across the country.
The Minister, however, frowned at the increasing cases of examination malpractices and urged ANCOPSS to rise to the challenge in the overall interest and development of the nation.
His words: “Moral decadence in the school system is one of the malaise afflicting our educational system that requires some urgent attention. It has really become the norm of recent to hear of ‘miracle centres’ where unscrupulous teachers and even heads of schools assist students to cheat during their examinations”.
According to him, reports in recent times have indicated that students who are in their final year in FCT schools transfer to schools in the neighbouring states to write their exams and “miraculously” pass with flying colours.
“It is essential that this form of fraud is quickly nipped on the bud before it becomes too big to control as it portends danger to the future of education in Nigeria,” he stressed.
On mass failure of students in WASC/NECO examinations, the Minister called on ANCOPSS to look closely into the immediate and remote causes of the incessant mass failures.
Senator Aliero emphasised that if we get our educational system right, every other thing would fall in line.
Welcoming guest to the occasion, the Chairman of the FCT Chapter of ANCOPSS, Hajiya Fati Abdul-Rahman appreciated the support and cooperation the Confederation has been receiving from the FCT Administration.
