…Threatens To Revoke Onne Road Project
The Federal Government has disclosed its readiness to re-award the dualisation of the Onne FOT road project to another competent contractor.
The move follows the abandonment of the N16 billion project by Julius Berger owing to alleged insecurity.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Works, Hon Kabiru Abdulla Jalu who said this during an inspection of federal roads in Rivers state described the road as very strategic to the economy of the country.
Hon. Jalu regretted the abandonment of the project and other federal projects in the state, stressing that the situation has retarded development in the state.
At the Bodo/Bonny road project, the committee chairman blamed the slow pace of work on the project on lack of commitment on the part of the government and the contractor stressing that the situation would no longer be allowed to continue.
He said that the committee will ensure that more money is appropriated in the 2010 budget for federal projects in the state.
Earlier the External Affairs Manager of Gilta Nigeria Limited, Professor Jasan Ossai blamed the delay in the completion of the project on lack of funds, stressing that the Federal Government has always felt reluctant in releasing funds for the road project.
Prof. Ossai also blamed community crisis as another factor. He urged the lawmakers to use their position in the House to ensure the prompt release of money for the project.
