C’River To Spend N26.8bn On Water Provision
The Cross River government has said that it spent N26.8 billion on the provision of potable water between 1992 and 2010.
Mr Elemi Etua, the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board (CRSWB) Ltd., who disclosed this in Calabar on Wednesday, said the company required additional N9.8 billion to fund three new water schemes in Abi, Obubra and Yala local government areas.
Etua said that the government, in line with the African Development Bank (ADB)-assisted water programme, spent a total of N19.3 billion in providing water in Calabar and its environs from 1992 to 2005.
According to him, N17.4 billion of the amount was provided by the AfDB while the state government contributed N1.9 billion as counterpart fund.
“We used the money to provide water to 40,000 households and to some commercial and industrial consumers in Calabar and environs”, Etua said.
He said that from 2005 to date, the World Bank had funded the extension of water between 40,000 and 45,000 households in the Calabar axis to the tune of N7.5 billion.
He said that the World Bank funds were also deployed into the construction of three water schemes in Ikom, Ogoja and Obudu areas.
“The three new projects will provide water to more than 45 communities in the three local government areas”, he said, adding that efforts were being made to ensure that the projects were completed and inaugurated in October 2010.
The CRSWB chief Executive officer disclosed that the board had negotiated a 42-million-dollar loan for the new water schemes with the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation of Japan and that an agreement on it was signed in January 2010.
“As soon as the state government concludes the necessary paper work on the loan, the projects would be advertised and hopefully, the contracts would be awarded in July”, he stated.
Etua explained that in the new projects, the state government would provide 15 per cent of the loan as counterpart fund, stressing that more than 50 rural communities would benefit from the scheme.
