Disburse SURE-P Funds Directly To LGs, Edo Urges FG
Edo State Government,
has, called on the Federal Government to disburse the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, funds directly to local government councils rather than passing them through state coordinators.
Speaking through Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, at a briefing, Chief Lucky James, insisted that channelling the money through state coordinators was not achieving the purpose for which the funds were meant, claiming that state coordinators were using the funds for political patronage rather than empowering the youths.
James, who briefed newsmen on the utilisation of SURE-P funds in local government councils in the state, said in Edo State under the leadership of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, “the local governments were mandated to inject their SURE-P funds on projects that have direct impact on the lives of the people.
We believe that the SURE-P funds are supposed to help ameliorate the sufferings of our unemployed youths and that is why I am not comfortable that the funds are being channelled through state coordinators because we have observed that rather than use them appropriately, those coordinators use the funds to satisfy their political associates and cronies.
“The funds will be better utilised if channeled directly to local governments. A situation where a middle man is selected and given the name “state coordinator” and given money to be disbursing to his cronies, and political associates, is inappropriate”.
I am challenging the Federal Government to rechannel these funds and give them to the local governments who will make better use of these funds. I also want the EFCC to look into the activities of some of these state coordinators because some of these monies are being misappropriated.”
James noted that local government councils in the state had become a reference point on the application of SURE-P funds, asserting that “this was the position of the SURE-P supervisors who visited the state recently to take stock of the application of the funds in Edo State.”
