Walson-Jack Preaches Politics Of Inclusion
The leader of Rivers Converge, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Hon. Nimi Walson-Jack has said that the idea of winner-takes-all in Nigerian politics has no place in the country’s democracy.
Walson-Jack while speaking at a prayer rally for Nigeria and President Goodluck Jonathan organised in Port Harcourt yesterday said that if the politics of winner takes all was played in the country’s politics, the losers would opt out of the democratic system, which would not augur well for democracy.
According to him, the refusal of the federal government to influence elections for the benefit of the ruling party sends an important message, adding that politics needed not to be a zero-sum game.
He stressed that equitable distribution of resources, responsibilities, zoning and rotation of elective public offices was essential in a democratic society.
‘Let us understand that in choosing our leaders, without a fair system, which reflects the popular will, real development will elude us”, he said, adding “sustainable development is not in brick and mortar, this is where we as a people miss it”.
Walson-Jack a governorship aspirant in Rivers State noted that real development was in building the values of service, accountability and collaboration for the interest of the people which is the litmus test that showed respect for the fundamentals of human dignity as enshrined in the country’s constitution.
Also speaking, elder Gomba Osarolor said that as Christians, “all of us are in the hand of God”, pointing out that “we need God to take position in the electoral process of the country”.
He prayed God to give President Jonathan and other leaders of the country the strength and wisdom to turn the country for better and condemned in its entirety the activities of Boko Haram and other violent acts being perpetrated in parts of the country.
