Erosion Claims Bayelsa Community
The Bayelsa
Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA) yesterday said erosion has destroyed Isampou community in Kolokumo/Opokumo local area of Bayelsa.
The agency’s Secretary, Mr Angos Dide, who led others to assess the situation, told newsmen in Yenagoa that the erosion destroyed 12 houses, 10 canoes and individual property underwater.
“The erosion happened on October 8 and it was caused by the heavy rain; one engine boat of eight horse power and jetties were also destroyed.
“Due to the water level which is already high, the river now overflows the bank and encroaches on the community causing erosion; property have been destroyed, especially farmland.
“We have been trying on our own to assist the community but we need the assistance of the Bayelsa Government to cushion the effect of the erosion on the community.
“BYSEMA needs the state government to provide relief materials for the community to enable them take care of their immediate needs,” Dide said.
Deputy Community Head of Isampou, Chief Paul Femedim, said the erosion was worrisome, calling on the federal and state governments to come to their aid.
“Well, no death was recorded, it is only that we (community) are still in sober mood because the owners of those houses have nowhere to go,” Femedim said.
