Govt Warns Ikoku Mechanic Village Over Poor Sanitation
The Rivers State Government has threatened to shut down the Ikoku mechanic village over the poor sanitary condition of the area.
The Commissioner for Environment, Barrister Kingsley Chinda gave this warning on Thursday in Port Harcourt during the weekly special sanitation inspection exercise.
The commissioner said that the attitude of the traders in the area has constituted an embarrassment to the government, stressing that they must change their attitude or have the village shut down.
Barrister Chinda, who was represented by the Director, Environmental Health and Safety in the ministry, Mr. Napoleon Ewule, also called on traders in the state to comply with the state environmental laws which, he said, is for the benefit of the entire state.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment has challenged its staff to be innovative by initiating proposals that will boost service delivery.
The Commissioner, Barrister Kingsley Chinda, gave the charged during an interactive meeting with staff of the ministry.
Barrister Chinda also said that the ministry would give more attention to staff welfare, while training and retraining will be held regularly to enhance their capability.
In his speech, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Rufus Godwins urged for discipline among staff of the ministry and commended the commissioner for the manner in which he is piloting the affairs of the ministry.
