Govt Budgets N1.61b for MDGs Conditional Grant Scheme
The Delta State government has earmarked N1.61 billion for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS) projects that will be executed in 2010.
Dr Austin Obidi, the Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State on MDGs, disclosed the figure in an interview with newsmen in Asaba. Obidi said that 50 per-cent of the fund from the Delta Government, while the other 50 percent from the Federal Government’s debt relief fund. He said that Delta government would focus on the constructing of water and sanitation projects.
The special adviser said, “Under the water projects, we have the small water town scheme and fenced solar powered project and this includes boreholes.
“Under the sanitation projects, we are going to focus on the construction of toilets in market places, schools and hospitals.
“We are also going to construct staff quarters for medical staff, as well as procure anti-malaria and long lasting insecticide treated nets’’.
Obidi also said that the state government would procure and distribute teaching aids to schools of midwifery across the state. He further said, “Since 2007, the Federal Government has been extending the benefits of the savings from the debt relief grants from creditors to states through the MDGs.
“The scheme require states to contribute matching funds to complement equal amount of federal grants, which are to be pooled and applied in the pursuit of MDGs,”
According to him Delta State for the first time benefited from the scheme in 2008.
“Through this scheme, the federal government is collaborating with local government councils in the state to execute special projects and programmes in health and water sectors,” he added.
