Sixty students from Niger Delta region were beneficiaries from the scheme which was inaugurated Friday at Brook Stone Secondary School, Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Shell Country Chair and Managing Director, Mutiu Sunmonu said the 60 beneficiaries were talented and gifted people who probably would not have had the opportunity to access the kind of quality secondary education as would be provided by the scheme.
The Shell MD stated in his address at the ceremony that, “the beneficiaries were chosen through a rigorous selection process and highly competitive examination conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State”.
“After successfully completing the orientation programme, the pupils are placed in three top private boarding schools in Port Harcourt: Brookstone Secondary School, Jephthah Comprehensive College and Archdeacon Brown Education Centre”, Sunmonu explained.
The SPDC boss who was represented at the event by the Asset Manager East of the company, Mr Boma Brown, noted that the Cradle-To-Career Programe was designed to bridge educational inequalities resulting from geographical and socio-economic differences, promote access to quality education as well as enhance high literacy levels in the Niger Delta region.
Describing education as the bed rock of any nation’s growth and development, the managing director said the challenge lies in developing and impler menting strategies to make educational opportunities accessible and affordable to every one irrespective of social status or background.
Rivers State Commissioners for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi commended SPDC for giving opportunity to children of the state through the programme.
The commissioner who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs Stella Wigwe noted that Rivers State gives priority to education and urged other organisations and corporate bodies to emulate Shell.
