Buyers Warned Against Roadside Meat Sellers
The Chairman of National
Butchers Union of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Alhaji Musa Baba Ahmad has called on the residents of the state to buy meat from government approved abattoir to avoid contacting diseases.
Alhaji Ahmad, stated this in an interview with The Tide in his office at Oginigba, in Port Harcourt.
He decried a situation where people purchased meat from unauthorized dealers and explained the health implication of buying meat from unknown sources.
“Sometimes, when we import our cow from North, one or two die on the road, so we disposed them you find out that these villagers rush them and sell them after butchering them, consumers come to buy not knowing was a dead cow or goat meat”.
“That’s why we are afraid of the meat that comes out from those neighbouring states”.
According to him, meat sold at Oginigba Abattoir is always inspected by a Veterinary doctor to ensure that it is safe for consumption.
He also noted that his union was committed to good sanitary condition of the abattoir as every Thursday of the week had been set aside for sanitation exercise.
“Butchers do observe their sanitation everyday but mostly on Thursdays at about 6am-10am.
He dispelled the rumour that Ebola virus could be contracted by eating goat and cow meats and urged the buyers to continue to patronize the meat sellers at the market.
