‘Name NAFDAC HQ After Akunyili’
The Nigerian Association of Patent and Propriety Medicine Dealers Association (NAPPMED) yesterday urged the Federal Government to immortalise former Director-General of NAFDAC Prof Dora Akunyili
National President of the association, Mr. Vincent Mammah made the call in Abuja in an interview with newsmen.
Mammah suggested that it would be befitting to name the NAFDAC headquarters after Akunyili in view of her outstanding contribution in the country’s war against fake and counterfeit drugs.
“Prof Dora Akunyili, the former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) and Information Minister, was a global amazon who waged a successful war against fake drugs in Nigeria.
“She was a rare gem who fought the drug war with an unprecedented passion and patriotism, even at the risk of her own life.
“Mrs Akunyili, in the process, saved the lives of many innocent Nigerians who would have died of fake and counterfeit drugs, and so, it would be befitting to name NAFDAC headquarters after her,” he said.
According to Mammah, Nigerians and, particularly, patent medicine vendors, would greatly miss the ex-NAFDAC boss who brought sanity into their businesses and inspired public confidence in the nation’s drug industry.
“Prior to Akunyili’s appointment as NAFDAC D-G, the agency seemed to be non-existent, NAPPMED members did not know how genuine the drugs they were buying and selling from drug manufacturing companies.
“When she took over, she literally opened our eyes to the menace of fake and counterfeit drugs through her aggressive enlightenment campaign; so we keyed into her vision and collectively sanitised the system.”
Mammah also urged the Federal Government to intervene in the dispute between NAPPMED and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria over the regulation of patent medicine vendors’ licences in the country.
Akunyili died of cancer in an Indian hospital on 7 June and will be buried on 28 August.
