Plans have been con
cluded for Uganda Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on the former’s plans to adopt the e-wallet system already practiced in Nigeria.
In a recent visit by a study team from Uganda to Nigeria, a member of the Uganda delegation, Mrs Ahmed Asebe, stated that the partnership would help raise her country’s agricultural programme and development.
Mrs Ahmed acknowledged that the e-wallet system, an offshort of Nigeria’s Growth Enhancement Support (GES) Scheme was a unique strategy.
With this system, millions of farmers have been registered all over the country, ensuring that farmers get regular updates on their mobile phones as to when and where to pick up subsidized fertilizer and other inputs.
The system has brought about greater transparency to the system which was hitherto fraught with irregularities Mrs Ahmed also said that the e-wallet system would play a role in solving the Ugandan challenge with agriculture implementation such as procurement of farm inputs.
“There is no doubt that the team’s visit to Nigeria will impact on Uganda’s agriculture sector”, she said.
