INEC Inaugurates Committee On Voter Education
The Independent Na
tional Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State last Tuesday inaugurated a National Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Voter Education and Publicity (NIACVEP) aimed at engendering credible elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Rivers State, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, who inaugurated the committee in Port Harcourt, urged the body to ensure viable voter education in the state for fraud-free election.
Ikoiwak congratulated members of the committee on their inclusion to educate the people, adding that much was expected from them.
He said that their task was a clarion call and a roadmap towards a greater country where the future of Nigerian children would be guaranteed.
“You are not doing this for just INEC but for the Nigerian people who have been groping for credible elections and good government. “As you are doing it, remember that the failure or success of the exercise would surely determine the outcome of elections in the country,’’ the REC said.
Ikoiwak disclosed that the distribution of permanent voter cards would commence from August 22 to 24 in Rivers State.
The REC said that the commission would also embark on continuous voter registration aimed at accommodating those without voter’s card.
According to him, it is also aimed at accommodating people who have now attained the age of 18 and above.
Responding, the Rivers Commissioner for Information, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, commended INEC for inaugurating the committee, pledging to support it through aggressive publicity.
Semenitari promised to do everything within her powers to ensure that the exercise was a success in area of mass education, especially in rural communities.
