Robbers Kill Two Policemen, Two Bank Officials In PH
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, has said that two policemen and two bank officials were shot dead by suspected armed robbers yesterday at Igurunta roundabout in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
Ogunsakin told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the incident occurred as the bankers were conveying money to the airport.
He said that the affected policemen were on mufti and not officially assigned to provide escort when the incident happened.
“ Our anti- robbery unit and other units are on the trail of the robbers. The command has launched a serious manhunt for the robbers to bring them to book,’’ he said.
Ogunsakin said that the command, however, could not ascertain the actual amount of money carted away by the fleeing robbery suspects during the attack.
Eye witness account said the gunmen ambushed the convey of bullion van and the Police escort with an ash volour Toyota Highlander Jeep, shot and killed the two Policemen and two bank officials before carting away huge cash at about 10.30am.
The Tide learnt that immedaitely after the successful operation, the gunmen headed towards the airport axis.
But luck ran out on the gunmen when they were intercepted at Elele by a team of Policemen and the owner of the Highlander Jeep, who were trailing the robbers with the aid of a tracker in the car, said to have been snatched earlier in the morning yesterday.
The gunmen were later said to have ben arrested after six hours of chase by the Polie, and the Highlander Jeep recovered.
Efforts to get the State Commissioner of Police to confirm the arrest of the robbers proved abortive as calls put through his mobile phone failed.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
