Director Defends Ban On ‘Okada’ In Kaduna
The Kaduna State Director
of Road Traffic Services, Malam Ali Dantsoho, last Tuesday, defended the ban imposed on commercial motorcycle operation in the state, saying it is to enhance the safety of residents.
Dantosho, who heads the state Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), told our correspondent in Kaduna, that the ban was, “a very wise decision taken by the state government to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its people”.
Our correspondent reports that the ban on “Okada” will take effect from today.
According to him, most commercial motorcyclists operate under the influence of hard drugs, thereby putting the lives of passengers at risk.
He said the influx of okada riders, who were displaced by similar ban in Kano, Plateau and Niger states, had made roads in the state unsafe due to their recklessness.
Dantsoho also accused them of other crimes, adding that, “most robbery and theft offences had been traced to operators of okada.
The director insisted that the decision taken by the state government was for the benefit of every one and in line with its mandate to secure the lives and property of the people.
Dantsoho said that under the Road Traffic Regulation of the Federation, 1975, states have the responsibility of ensuring the security and safety of road users.
