Anxiety In UNIUYO Over Attack On VC’s Residence
Gunmen have attacked
the official residence of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, firing bullets into her premises but no life was lost during the incident.
A statement issued by the Registrar of the University, Mrs Edak Umodak, last Thursday in Uyo said that it took the gallantry of security men attached to the residence to repel the hoodlums.
“The gunmen, who were spotted by the fence engaged in a gun duel with policemen on duty and later zoomed off in their parked vehicle. The University of Uyo is grateful to God that no life was lost in the encounter,” the registrar said.
Umodak said the authorities of the university had alerted security operatives on the incident.
She alleged that the Vice Chancellor was attacked because of her determination to entrench culture of discipline and hard work in the institution.
“It has become very necessary to alert members of the public about the escalating violence against our amiable Vice-Chancellor. All God-fearing people should condemn this act and I urge aggrieved persons to adopt legitimate approaches to resolving issues,” she advised.
Spokesman of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Etim Dickson, said however, that the command was yet to receive formal report of the incident from the university.
In June 2013, some disgruntled elements, using a protest by students over hike in transport fare between the university’s main campus and city centre unleashed mayhem on the university.
During the protest, the Vice-Chancellor’s office complex and university’s records unit were razed down.
