Rivers Deputy Speaker Honours Journalist
The Deputy Speaker of
the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Leyii Kwanee, has celebrated the life of a verteran journalist, Mr Ruskin Amadi, News Editor of Rhythm FM 93.7, Port Harcourt.
Kwanee, who hosted Mr Amadi, family and friends at the Le Meridien Hotel, Port Harcourt, said he had monitored the professional performance of Mr Amadi, observing that he had stood on the path of truth and recurrent justice.
Hon Kwanee said that Mr Amadi had demonstrated forthrightness and fearlessness in his professional duties and had remained neutral in the political crises that enveloped Rivers State, anchoring his judgment on core professional values and ethics.
The lawmaker said that it was on this basis that he chose to celebrate him as he turned 50 years old, expectant of other journalists to be conscious that people were watching them. The state lawmaker pointed out that sycophancy and pecuniary gratification do not pay in the long run.
He urged journalists by emulate the life of Amadi and stated that the celebration was not only for Amadi but the entire press which had demonstrated will and ensured that the truth prevailed in the state despite intimidation.
On how he came about the fete, Kwnaee said, “I became aware of the birthday of Mr Amadi through the Facebook and I decided to contact and inform him about my plans to celebrate it with him.
Hon Kwanee who is also the chairman, Parliamentary Exchange and Mentorship Programme of the Pan-African Parliament, assured that he would from time to time encourage selfless practice among journalists.
In his speech, the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, Mr Opaka Dokubo, thanked the Deputy Speaker for his concern and support for the press.
In response, Mr Amadi expressed gratitude to the Deputy Speaker and described his action as a rare gesture, pointing out that politicians rarely remember sacrifices of journalists whom they climb through their back to success.
