Author Lists Measures To Resolve Boundary Disputes
An author, Mr
ThankGod George Ekine has attributed the lingering boundary disputes in our society to the absence of effective tectiniques and measures for resolving disputes.
Ekine who canvassed better dispute resolution methods in his book, “Resolving Boundary disputes” which was presented in Port Harcourt recently, emphasised the need for the adoption of the traditional model of conflict resolution in boundary dispute.
He said the methods which is projected by the customary court system has a great impact on the stability and socio-economic well-being of the society.
The author traced Nigeria’s boundary problems to 1914 when the amagalmated nation inherited what the league of nations left of the territory after the scramble for Africa in 1985, which partitioned the continent among members of the league.
With detailed historical recollection, the author catalogued the different boundary adjustments undertaken by the Federal Government of Nigeria, following the creation of states and local government areas, noting that the political interest in such actions has resulted in festering boundary disputes.
The author faulted the judgement on the disputed Bankassi peninsula ceded to Cameroun, and called for a review of the judgement based on the protracted diplomatic dispute on the matter.
Earlier, the book reviewer, Mr R.N. Godwins, JP, described the nine chapter book as a master piece on boundary dispute.
Godwins said issues of boundary dispute was prevailent in our society and called for the application of the recommendations in the book to address issues of boundary conflicts.
