‘Books, Basis Of Literacy’
Books have been de
scribed as the first step in the course of literacy pursuit.
The Acting Director, Rivers State Litracy Board (RSLB), Elder Lucky Welekwe stated this during a chat with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt.
Reacting to the notion of falling interest in reading and the resort to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities as sources of literacy, Welekwe said that literacy begins with reading of a book.
He said “ everybody is now turning to the computer or internet for information and other things but the truth remains that for literacy to be gotten, it has to start with the book. You cannot leave one to court two. The illiterate person must start with the book before climbing to the computer or even the internet”.
Welekwe maintained that internet cannot take the place of conventional books because “the internet is for the literate and not the illiterate.”
“There are still some places in our society where the ICT gadgets cannot function due to some impediments including shortage of electricity supply but the books blend in every area. The books can go everywhere but the internet can’t”, he stated.
Welekwe further revealed that there are lots of students, youths and researchers who are still bent on reading, stating that state library was always filled to its brim by readers and researchers in all walks of life.
While commending the state government and Port Harcourt City for being the World Book Capital City, Welekwe expressed optimism that the state’s education sector would not let down the honour but strive to keep the flag flying.
He pledged the partnership of the board where necessary to maintain the honour and thrilling for higher grounds in terms of literacy.
Welekwe revealed that the state library service cuts across every facet of life and called on the public to take advantage of the services to read in order to gain knowledge, make contributions to the learning world and stand secure and self confident in issues of learning and life.
