Flood Victims Seek Govt’s Assistance
Flood victims in Calabar
metropolis have appealed to the Cross River Government and organisations to assist them with relief materials and financial support.
They made their request on Tuesday while speaking to newsmen in Calabar.
The rain which caused the flooding, started around 10 p.m. on Monday and stopped at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Narrating her ordeal, Mrs Patricia Archibong, a resident of the Calabar South Local Government Area, said that it rained for about 10 hours.
According to her, the rain pulled down her fence and flooded her living room.
“Flooding has been our major problem in this Elijah Henshaw street, we are always victims of flooding whenever the rainy season comes. As a result of this flood, I have lost most of my valuables, including foodstuff, furniture, electronics and others,” she said.
Archibong appealed to the Cross River Government and organisations to look into their plight and alleviate their sufferings.
Speaking after inspecting the flooded areas in Calabar South, Mr Aloysius Edet, described the incident as pathetic.
Edet, a Community Relations Officer in Calabar South Local Government Area, also called on the state government to assist the victims financially to help them recover some of the items they lost to the flood.
Also, in Calabar Municipality, residents appealed to the state government to find a permanent solution to flooding challenge.
One of them, Mr Andrew Essien, said he lost his original certificates and other valuable items to the flooding.
Essien appealed to the state government to construct more drainage systems to enable the rain to flow freely through the channels.
Other flood victims who spoke to newsmen, also appealed to the state government and other private organisations to come to their aid.
