Expert Wants FG To Relinquish Mineral Resources Management
The Managing Director of
Treasure Energy Resources, Dr Eddie Wikina, has said that unless the federal government hands off from the management of mineral resources, the oil and gas industry would not thrive.
He dropped the hint in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt recently.
Wikina, said that instead, states should be permitted to manage oil and gas business in their areas as to allow development of the sector.
According to him, there could be no enough reason why 10 per cent equity should not be given to states in the area of oil operation in the country.
To buttress his point, he called on the participation of the ongoing national confab to take the issue of oil and gas business very seriously and ensure that something meaningful was done about it.
He maintained that oil and gas management in countries like United States of America and others are not solely managed by the US government, wondering why Nigerian’s federal government would continue to be the sole manager of the country’s oil and gas industry.
The Treasure Energy boss, blamed the issue of oil theft on poor management, adding that if the resources are properly managed that there would be no oil theft and sabotage.
He revealed that there are several locked oil fields in the country, especially Rivers State, while calling on the federal government to unlock them saying that there should be a change in the system.
About the local bidding slated for next month as promised by the federal government, he said nothing has been done about it.
The Tide gathered that the federal government had earlier promised to offer about 31 oil fields for bidding under the local contact act
He also expressed worry why Niger Delta states cannot own oil fields, adding that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) should be passed soonest, if the government was still using it as an excuse.
Meanwhile, he has lauded the Rivers State government over its decision to improve on the lives of the citizens, especially the rural areas.
