Motorists Want FRSC To Remove Broken Down Vehicles
Some motorists in Uyo
have called on the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to always remove broken down vehicles from the highways to avert road accidents.
Reacting to a ghastly accident involving a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle and a broken down Mack Truck on Abak road, Uyo they said such interventions would reduce accidents on the nation’s roads.
Our correspondent reports that the Honda SUV with registration number Abuja (YAB 398 AG) ran into a stationary truck with registration number Lagos (XS 952 KCF) leaving the driver of the SUV seriously injured.
Mr Johnson Udoh, a motorist, told our correspondent at the scene of the accident that FRSC personnel ought to have ensured that the vehicle did not pose a hazard to other road users.
“What has happened here is just due to the negligence on the part of those who would have averted the accident by placing relevant signs to warn road users.
“No matter the plans they had, they should have even stationed some of their officials pending when the truck is evacuated.
“You can imagine that we have been here for the past two and the half hours to bring the driver out of his car but it is not easy because of the high impact which has trapped the driver inside the car.
“What if this incident happened at the middle of the night? Udoh asked.
Speaking also on the accident, another motorist, Mr Michael Akpan, said that the management of road safety should re-orientate their officials on how to respond to distress calls.
Reacting to the development, the Head of Operations of FRSC Akwa Ibom Command, Mr Emmanuel Onuoha, confirmed the accident.
“Whenever there is a distress call the officer contacted must make every arrangement to ensure that a palliative measure is brought on ground pending the arrival of a tow truck.
“When our men went to rescue the accident victim, they were almost mobbed by angry youths because, according to them, our men could have averted the accident.
“The command is not happy with what happened and we remain grateful to the journalist who called earlier to inform us of the broken down truck before the sad incident that later occurred,” he said.
Onuoha appealed to the state government to help the command in providing them with tow vehicles to enable the command to do its job more effectively.
