RSG, Shell Train 30 Special Persons …As Non-Indigenes Take Over Rehab Centre
No fewer than 30 persons
with disabilities are now undergoing training in various skills in Rivers State, courtesy of the Rivers State Government and the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC).
The beneficiaries were drawn from the 23 local government areas of the state and will undergo training in telephone repairs, shoe making, fashion and designing and barbing.
Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Hon. Joe Poroma, said the training will enable those living with physical disabilities to acquire different skills that will help them to become self employed, adding that they will be given starter packs to begin personal businesses on the skills they are trained in.
The commissioner, therefore, challenged them to take the training as an opportunity to better their lives. Also speaking, Head, Economic Empowerment, Shell LiveWire, Mrs Joy Ekine, said the training is part of corporate social responsibility in the state, and urged participants to make good use of the opportunity to acquire skills that will be useful to them in the future.
In the same vein, Director of Rehabilitation Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mr Godwin Echeonwu, advised the participants to enrich their lives with the skills available and be ready to make a living from them in the future.
One of the beneficiary, who spoke and is visually impaired, Loveday Amadi, commended the state government and Shell for working together to empower the physically challenged in the state, and promised that they will use their abilities to develop their capacity that will turn their lives around.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Hon Joe Poroma has disclosed that ninety nine per cent of inmates at the Rehabilitation Centre, Iriebe are non-indigenes.
He noted that majority of destitutes removed from the streets are fed, clothed and given free medical treatment until they are stabilized and repatriated to their states.
To discourage destitutes from returning to the state, he stated that the ministry has decided to snap them and keep their records.
Poroma regretted that most of those taken off the streets and repatriated to their states were thereafter let loose by their handlers, as they find their way back to the streets.
