2011: Shekarau Guns For ANPP Ticket
As the 2011 Presidential election draws closer, the Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has formally expressed his intention to run in the election, if given the ticket by the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
Governor Shekarau made the declaration to contest the 2011 Presidential Pool during an interactive session with editors of state owned newspapers.
This declaration has finally put to rest speculations on Shekaran’s future ambition after vacating office at the end of his second term in office as governor as he declared “if my party decides to field me as the presidential candidate, I would have no choice than to accept the offer.”
Shekaran stated that everything about his ambition for 2011 largely depends on the position of the party, which gave him the mandate in 2003 and 2007 as governor of Kano State. “I still believe strongly that it is this same party that will determine my futue moves,” he said.
The governor further stated “I wait for my party’s reaction, my party’s decision, if it is the collective decision of my party, then I have no quarrel with that, and I will not turn down my party’s offer as a loyal party man, I will continue to serve in whatever capacity the party decision necessary.”
The peoples governor accepted that there have been intense pressures from friends, political associates, and well wishers on him to contest the presidency, come 2011, and requested those backing him for the race to pray for Allah’s guidance, so that the party makes the best decision in this matter.
He also stated that who ever emerges the party’s candidate enjoys the party’s support for the race.
On the future of the party’s involvement in the government of National Unity, (GNU), Shekaran revealed that the GNU was a creation of the presidency, pointing out that in 2007, president Umaru Musa Yar’dua invited political parties to join hands with his administration, to work together and move the country forward.
