Farmers and herdsmen in
Nasarawa State have signed a peace pact to end hostilities in various communities in the state.
The resolution to end hostilities was reached in Lafia,  following a peace and security meeting, brokered by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to end attacks between farmers and herdsmen in nine northern states.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations, Mr Mike Zuokumor, who presided over the peace meeting, said that a lot had been achieved through the dialogue.
Zuokumor, who read the communiqué after the two-day meeting, said that the warring groups had agreed to halt hostilities and embrace peace.
He said that the meeting also resolved that a joint committee, comprising farmers, herdsmen and security would be set up.
“This is to check the excesses of criminals, who might have infiltrated their ranks to cause mayhem.”
Zuokumor advised those benefiting from the crisis to have a rethink, saying that the law would soon take its full course against them.
He also urged the affected communities to support the peace initiative by eschewing violence and other vices, capable of jeopardising the gains so far recorded.
In their separate remarks, Mohammed Hussain, the Secretary of the Nasarawa State Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and Bernard Ashikaa, the President of the Nasarawa State Tiv Development Association, lauded the peace initiative.
Hussain urged the two parties to obey the resolution of the meeting and ensure that they lived harmoniously.
Ashikaa, on his part, appealed to those that had fled their homes as a result of the crisis to return.
“With the commitment demonstrated by  leaders of the herdsmen at the meeting and the resolution, those who fled their homes for fear of attacks can now come back home,” he said.
