Lagos Lawyers Hail Ban On Open Defecation
Some lawyers last
Saturday commended the Lagos State Government for banning open urination and defecation on road sides in the state.
The lawyers who expressed their views in separate interviews with newsmen in Lagos, said the ban would go a long way in checking indiscipline.
The Tide reports that Gov. Babatunde Fashola, had ordered officers of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), to henceforth, arrest persons found urinating or defecating in public places.
The governor also described such conduct as a breach of the state’s sanitation laws, and ordered KAI to ensure that those found guilty were arrested.
A lawyer, Mr Mike Dugeri, said the ban was long overdue, noting that it would promote healthy living, and check the nuisance exhibited by some people.
He appealed to the government to construct public toilets at strategic locations and public places like parks and markets.
Another lawyer, Mr Alilu Aminu, lauded the government’s decision on the ban, and also urged the state government to provide public and mobile toilets in all the major areas.
Aminu stressed the need for government to make it mandatory for all landlords to provide at least two toilets for their tenants.
He advised government to constitute mobile courts, which would work together with KAI to try suspects immediately after being arrested in order to avoid unlawful arrest or illegal detention.
Another lawyer, Mrs Lilian Emugo, urged government to establish a special task force to act as a check on major areas where such nuisance were rampant
She, however, underscored the need for the establishment of mobile toilets, waste bins and other sewage disposal facilities.
Emugo also suggested the creation of mobile courts to prosecute offenders.
