Academic and social activities at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, was stalled following the death of a lecturer, Mr Pius Zor-Zor, last Monday.
Zor-Zor died as a result of an electric pole that fell on him.
The Tide learnt that the incident occurred at about 5.20pm on that fateful day at the school premises as the deceased was said to have been returning to his residence after the close of work.
The Tide learnt that the deceased, a lecturer in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, was a former councillor from Wiiyakara community in Khana Local Government Area of the state.
A family source, who narrated the incidence to The Tide, said the victim met his untimely death as he attempted to rescue an electrician, who was said to have risked electrification while working on a faulty pole in the school.
The source told The Tide that the victim was passing by when he saw the electrician struggling for survival and jumped to rescue him, adding that while the rescue operation was going on, another electric pole fell and smashed his skull.
The Tide gathered that the deceased was rushed to a nearby hospital, Inadum Medical Centre, Bori, where he was confirmed dead by the doctors on duty.
Some students in the department of the deceased lecturer expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident, describing it as a great loss to the students and the entire school.
Confirming the incident on phone, the Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr Innocent Ogbonda-Nwoanwe, described the incident as a sad development, adding that the polytechnic community has been thrown into mourning as a result of the tragic incident.
Ogbonda-Nwoanwe said that such tragic occurrence had never happened in the history of the institution, and described the victim as hard working staff who knew his onions.
While condoling the family of the late lecturer, he disclosed that the school authority has concluded arrangement to visit the family.
