INEC Sells 1,238 Laptops To Rivers
The Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers yesterday handed over 1,238 laptops to the Rivers State Ministry of Education to boost computer literacy among students.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, said the gesture was aimed at expanding the frontiers of education, especially in ICT.
Ikoiwak said the laptops were part of the 2,982 procured and used by INEC for voter registration in 2010.
The REC said the desire of government to shun wastefulness, necessitated the handing over of the laptops to the state.
“These laptops were procured for capturing of data during the voter registration exercise, after which they became unused.
“So, we have to sell them out at subsidised rate to the Rivers State Government to support their ICT compliance programme,” Ikoiwak said.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Alice Nemi, who received the laptops, commended INEC, saying that the state would use the facilities well
Nemi, who applauded the efforts of the State Government in educational reforms, said the laptops would be handed over to students across the state to enhance their knowledge of ICT.
She said that INEC had demonstrated its willingness to support quality education and ICT compliance in the state with the handing over of the laptops to the state.
