President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said that with the new National Automotive Industry Policy approved by the administration, the country would soon start exportation of cars.
Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he granted audience to a delegation of business community from Anambra led by Gov. Peter Obi.
He said the new policy would aid industrialisation of the automotive sector, and assured that the administration would continue to encourage industrialists to grow.
“In the next few years, Nigeria will begin to export cars to other countries. If Nigeria must become great as expected by all, the Federal Government must encourage the industry to grow.
“To this end, we will continue to encourage industrialists in Anambra.”
The president promised that industrialists’ basic needs such as road, power and port would be addressed appropriately.
He said his government was devoting attention and resources to the power sector because of its critical role in industrialisation, noting that housing and agriculture sectors were also receiving attention.
Vice President Namadi Sambo told the delegation that Jonathan had recently approved 3.7 billion dollar (about N580 billion) to improve power transmission across the country.
Earlier, Obi said that the enterprising nature of the Anambra people made them well-positioned to assist the president in the achievement of his administration’s transformation agenda.
Obi, elected under the platform of APGA, declared support for the president’s transformation agenda.
He said he led the delegation to express their support for the president and bring to his attention some of their collective needs.
The governor noted that if the needs were addressed, it would help in anchoring the growth and development of industry in the state.
Some of the needs, according to the him, are the completion of the 330/132/33KV power substation at Nnewi and the provision of uninterrupted power supply in the Onitsha Harbour Industrial Area and Ozubulu Industrial Hub.
Obi also requested the completion of Nnamdi Azikwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, and the inclusion of Anambra in the rail master plan.
He made a case for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of federal roads within the state such as Oba-Nnewi-Okigwe Section 1 and Nnewi-Okija Road.
