RSG Tasks Communities On Security
As part of measures to tackle insecurity in Riverine communities of the state, the Rivers State government has called on coastal communities to assist in checking crime in their domains.
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, gave the charge at Opobo Town, while declaring open the fourth edition of the Opobo International Boat Regatta.
Represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry, the Governor remarked that the need to beef-up security at the riverine communities has become imperative following the difficult terrain of the state.
He noted that maintaining security in the upland area is easy but stressed that the difficult terrain of most riverine communities makes it difficult for security operatives to operate, hence the need for communities to assist government.
He, however, commended the people of Opobo Kingdom for their peaceful disposition, saying the area has not witnessed any major disturbance and urged them to keep it up.
The Governor pledged assistance to the OIB, being the only nationally recognised festival in the state adding that, the event has shown remarkable improvement from the previous editions.
Responding to the plea by the custodian of OIB, King Dandeson Jaja for more financial assistance, the Governor said, “The state will give you every support for this event to continue, because this event has put the state in the right position in boat festival”.
In his remarks, the Amayanabo of Opobo expressed gladness over improved security in the state. He recalled the nightmare that gripped the people of the state last year over frequent kidnappings but commended the state government for tackling the menace.
He called on the people of the state to desist from all forms of violence and vice; stressing that government on its own part should fulfill its electoral promises to the electorate by creating better economic opportunities.
The King prayed that in 2010, the country will experience real peace following the amnesty and attempts by the government to revive the economy.
