Agency To Generate Fund For Govt
The Chairman, Rivers State Tourism Development Agency, (RSTDA), Hon. Vincent Erinwo, has said that the agency has the capacity of generating funds for the government.
Erinwo, who spoke to our correspondent recently at the last quarter and end of year re-union assembly of the County Grammar School, Ikwerre Etche Old Boys Class 1976 at Elele said tourism when properly funded could stand on its feet in the long run.
“Tourism all over the world were it is properly funded after a period begins to fund itself.
He said the RSTDA has the potential to generate fund for government in no distant time particularly if the necessary funds were injected into the section.
“It will generate fund, it will be self sustaining in no distant time” he said.
The RSTDA boss who has served one year of a four year tenure said the agency has put in place what is called “strategic development plan” even as he expressed optimism that the process was bound for success.
He revealed that the plan has been submitted to the Rivers State Executive Council.
According to him, the proposal which includes a road map if approved by the government, the RSTDA would be able to surmount its problems.
Noting that funding was the major challenge of the agency, he expressed optimism that the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, was positively disposed to tourism development in the state.
He said the challenges the governor had in funding the sector was not peculiar to Rivers State but was a national problem.
He opined that there has been a drastic drop in funds allocation from the federal government and the development has affected a number of other developmental plans the governor has.
He further expressed optimism that the tourism sub-sector would certainly benefit from the vision the governor has in the 2014 budget.
“And as soon as that budget is passed and we begin to receive from the government what we require, then we will go smoking, we will just be on the road” he said.
