Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Mallam Nasir Elrufai, yesterday cheated death as he and 103 other passengers on board an Aero Contractor plane, survived a crash landing in Lagos.
El-Rufai, who was on his way to attend last Sunday of the year church service at Pastor Tunde Bakare’s Latter Rain Assembly, broke the news via his Twitter handle.
El-Rufai said, “Upon landing in Lagos, our Aero aircraft lost a tyre. The pilot did a great job of breaking to a halt suitably. My phones flew under seats”.
“It was amusing hearing shouts of Allah Akbar and Jesus, Jesu while the dutiful captain was trying to slow the plane down to a safe location!
“One of the passengers joked that he knew nothing would happen to us as I was on board, nice of him, but Allah decides our fate in His way.
“The Aero pilot was good, the cabin staff calm and professional in the midst of mild drama and little panic by a few passengers. We thank God.
“On my way to Latter Rain Assembly to see my egbon, Pastor Tunde Bakare, by God’s Grace”.
Reacting to the incident, Co-ordinating spokesperson, Aviation Parastatals, Yakubu Dati said: “An aircraft, Boeing 737-500 with Registration No 5N-BLC operated by Aero-Contractors landed safely at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, following loss of pressure in one of the tyres today, December 29, 2013. The aircraft, which landed at 10.50am, had a total of 104 passengers on board. “The aircraft has since been towed to the apron and Accident Investigation Prevention Bureau (AIPB) has commenced investigation into the incident.”
It would be recalled that the aircraft had departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja around 9.00am enroute Lagos and had a burst tyre on landing at MMA.
The incident is one of the many recorded this year, a development that has made many aviation experts call for overhaul of the sector.
