A youth leader, Mr Raphael Eke from Erema in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State, has hailed the efforts of Totalfina Elf in the development of the area.
Mr Eke, who spoke to our correspondent recently at a public function in Itu-Ogba, described the company as a good one that fulfils its community development obligations.
“Totalfina Elf is a very good company which relates well with the communities.
“They are trying and they make people know that there is oil and wealth in the area and we enjoy them”, he said.
He said due to the company’s capacity in carrying the people along positively, the incidents of friction and mistrust between the youths and elders was minimal.
“In terms of dissenting voices in the area of equitable distribution of amenities and empowerment, the relationship between the youths and elders has been cordial”, he said.
He added that sometimes, there was bound to be disagreement between the youths and the elders, but due to the free hand Totalfina Elf gives to every body, there has been no room for escalation of such misunderstandings.
He further explained that all contractors from the community were given adequate attention as at when due.
“As a contractor, if you go to the company they will give you job. And we have what they call community assistance jobs”, he said.
On the challenges facing the community and the company, Mr Eke said it was purely developmental.
He said the company gives the community the opportunity to make proposals for suitable projects to be put up by the company.
He said in such events, the people sit together and decide on the best one and the company does not hesitate to award contracts for such projects.
“As soon as the community comes up with what they want, the company approves without delay and the contractor goes to work for that specific project” he said.
